Introduction to role

AstraZeneca is seeking a dynamic and visionary Senior Director of Capabilities to lead and inspire our Oncology Medical Affairs team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in assessing and enhancing the capabilities of our medical teams, identifying gaps, and implementing strategies to address them effectively. You will oversee the Directors of Field Medical Capabilities, Global Medical Affairs Leaders Capabilities, and Digital Capabilities, guiding them as they equip their teams to meet the challenges of transforming care through innovation and tailored engagement. Additionally, you will lead individual projects that align with our vision to revolutionize oncology care.

This role will report directly to the Senior Director of Oncology Medical Training. Location: Gaithersburg (USA)

Accountabilities

  • Visionary Leadership: Develop and communicate a compelling vision for capability enhancement within the Oncology Medical Affairs division, aligning with AstraZeneca's broader goals of tailored
  • - engagement and transformative care.
  • Team Development and Mentorship: Serve as the functional manager for the Directors of Field Medical Capabilities, Global Medical Affairs Leaders Capabilities, and Digital Capabilities. Provide mentorship, support, and strategic direction to ensure their success and growth.
  • Lead the planning and execution of initiatives to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our global medical affairs teams.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Foster strong partnerships across departments and with external partners to ensure alignment and integration of capability development efforts with organizational objectives.
  • Manage individual projects in oncology medical affairs, using data-driven insights and innovative ways to achieve impactful outcomes.
  • Performance Monitoring: Develop and implement performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of capability programs and initiatives, continuously refining strategies to achieve excellence.
  • Resource Management: Oversee the allocation and management of resources within the capabilities function, ensuring optimal use of budget and personnel to achieve strategic goals.
  • Innovation and Digital Transformation: Champion digital innovation within the capabilities function, ensuring that digital tools and technologies are effectively integrated to enhance training, engagement, and care transformation initiatives.
  • Vendor Collaboration: Identify, manage, and collaborate with outsource providers for the development of new content material and training, ensuring high-quality deliverables that align with strategic goals.
  • Expert Partnerships: Collaborate with external experts to help identify and develop new training programs, bringing to bear their insights and expertise to improve the capability offerings.
  • Align all training programs with global guidelines, policies, processes, and procedures, maintaining the highest standards of regulatory adherence.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Education: Advanced degree or equivalent experience in a scientific subject area, health sciences, or related field (master's or higher)
  • Minimum of 7 years in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, with significant experience in oncology medical affairs.
  • Proven track record in leading cross-functional teams and managing senior leaders.
  • Proven track record in building capabilities and planning on a global or regional scale.
  • Experience working in a multicultural and diverse global environment.
  • Outstanding leadership and visionary skills, with the ability to encourage and lead change.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, with a focus on working well with customers, partners, and team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and initiatives with significant impact.
  • Expertise in training program design and implementation, including instructional design and adult learning principles.
  • Ability to assess training needs and develop tailored programs that address specific capability gaps.
  • Proficiency in applying digital learning tools and platforms to improve training delivery and engagement.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Experience in integrated KEE engagement across multiple channels.
  • Experience in care transformation initiatives within the oncology field.
  • Proven track record of driving digital innovation in training and capability development.
  • Experience in high-level change management and organizational development.
  • Advanced digital literacy and comfort with new technology adoption.
  • Strong understanding of the oncology landscape and emerging trends.

The annual base pay for this position ranges from $245,280.80 - 367,921.20. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program. Benefits offered include a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
