Marin County Parks manages 40 public parks and pathways, and 18,500 acres of open space. These public lands, which include McNears Beach, Paradise Beach, Roy's Redwoods, Bolinas Lagoon, Mount Burdell, and Ring Mountain, reflect the rich variety of ecosystems in coastal northern California.

• Seasonal Road & Trail Maintenance Technician - 4 trail & 1 roads positions are open, to operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment to perform carpentry, construction, masonry for County Open Space trail and road maintenance, grading and infrastructure projects, including operation of small heavy equipment and the transport of water and equipment.   
• Seasonal Fire Fuels & Vegetation Maintenance Technician - 2 positions are open, to perform a full range of Park and Open Space maintenance work including fire fuel veg-management, fire road pruning, erosion control projects, gate, entry & sign maintenance, drain maintenance and repairing winter storm drainage.

You will be working with an outstanding team of professionals that include Maintenance Equipment Operators, Seasonal Assistants, and volunteers

The season is anticipated to start March 17, 2025, and end November 22, 2025. These positions may end prior to November 22, 2025, if funding ceases or the work is complete. The typical work schedule is Monday - Thursday, 6:30am - 4:30pm. This is a 37.5 hour/week assignment. Occasional Saturday work for volunteer events is required with advance notice. Report to Lucas Valley Field office, 18 Jeannette Prandi Way, San Rafael.

Highly Desirable:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is highly valued at time of appointment. Possession of a valid Class B or A Driver's License is also highly valued. (California DMV information).

 KNOWLEDGE OF

• Trees, shrubs, plants, and groundcovers native and invasive to Marin County Open Space.
• Techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used trail & dirt road maintenance. 
• Equipment, tools, materials, methods, and procedures used in park and open space maintenance and development.
• Forest health and fire fuel reduction methods.
• Use, handling, application of and safety equipment.
• Use and routine maintenance of power and hand tools.
• Safety procedures related to the work.
• Business and shop mathematics.
• Record keeping and reporting methods.
• Basic methods and tools of the painting, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry trades.
• Basic techniques for instructing others in work procedures.

ABILITY TO

• Perform skilled construction of Open Space infrastructure and facilities project/maintenance work.
• Use and maintain motorized earth moving machinery, chippers and forestry equipment, including hand and power tools and other equipment used in open space land management.
• Educate users of rules and regulations tactfully and maintain good public relations.
• Operate all equipment in a safe and professional manner.
• Identify and correct potential safety hazards.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records related to work performed and materials used.
• Use sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
• Lead other employees, such as OS Seasonal Assistants, volunteers and contract crews

The Minimum Qualifications for Seasonal Roads & Trails Technician or Fire Fuel & Veg Maintenance Specialist: Six months of experience in construction, forestry, landscape and/or parks maintenance work. Completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of training and/or education in construction, forestry, carpentry, park or landscape maintenance or development may be substituted for the experience outlined above.
