Job Description Summary

Assesses the mortality risk of individual life insurance applications.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • The Medical Director is recognized as an expert in insurance medicine and will:

  • Assist in performing mortality and morbidity assessments of individual life insurance applications and contestable claims.
  • Handle referrals from life underwriters to help ensure appropriate mortality and morbidity risk assessment. Includes interpretation of resting and stress EKGs.
  • Assist in providing strategic direction for medical underwriting.
  • Participate in continuous medical research and development related to underwriting guidelines, protective value studies, the advancement of underwriting automation, and use of data analytics.
  • Perform statistical analysis of mortality and morbidity.
  • Represent the company at industry meetings.
  • Maintain positive and effective working relationships with Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial and Medical staff.
  • Research, design and present formal and informal technical medical underwriting training for Underwriting and Claims teams.
  • Have or develop a comprehensive understanding of common and uncommon medical impairments and their impact on mortality and morbidity risk.
  • Participate in underwriting manual updates, guidelines, review of forms and products, claims reviews, life expectancy calculations and any other aspects of Transamerica’s work where medical expertise is required.
  • Stay abreast of advances in medicine as well as any innovations in the risk selection process. Pursue continuing medical education applicable to insurance medicine.
  • Establish strong working relationships with medical directors at our reinsurance partners

Qualifications

  • Medical degree.
  • Board certified in family practice or internal medicine.
  • Five years of clinical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school
  • Possesses a current license to practice medicine in the United States
  • Specialist certification in Internal Medicine or related subspecialty such as Family Medicine, Cardiology or Oncology or other medical specialty relevant to insurance medicine
  • Board of Insurance Medicine Certification (or working towards) is desirable
  • Agreement to obtain Board Certification in Insurance Medicine is required
  • Demonstrated expertise in electrocardiogram and stress ECG interpretation is desirable
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience in clinical medical practice
  • Experience working in a remote, paperless environment is desirable
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, communication skills, critical thinking and analytical skills and sound judgment
  • Ability to explain medical information clearly and accurately to non-physicians
  • Good business acumen and attention to detail
  • Experience and education in data analytics and AI are highly desirable

Compensation

**Please note that the compensation information that follows is a good faith estimate for this position only and is provided pursuant to applicable pay transparency and compensation posting laws. It is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid in certain Company locations.**

The Salary for this position generally ranges between $183-235K. This range is an estimate, based on potential qualifications and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.

Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at Company discretion.
