Job Summary

The Department of Public Health and Health Sciences (PHHS) at the University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor Intermediate. Academic Advisors directly contribute to the University's retention and degree completion goals. Each advisor manages an assigned undergraduate student caseload, supporting students in all facets of their transition to the University and completion of their degree. Successful advisors engage early and often with their assigned caseload, monitor students' academic progress, and coordinate with faculty, academic support services, and other University resources.

This position will report directly to the Office Manager.

Responsibilities*

  • Work Systematically with undergraduate students to oversee course schedules and update degree completion plans
  • Assess student needs, referring students to appropriate university resources, such as
  • Financial Aid, Tutorial Support, Writing Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability and Accessibility Support Services, and Career Services
  • Conduct College Student Inventory (CSI) review meetings with new students
  • Document all advising appointments/interactions in the appropriate University advising system
  • Attend new student orientation sessions, providing registration support
  • Conduct confidential conversations using confidential information to provide advising services
  • Use technology and data management to support the implementation and assessment of retention and student outreach programs with Public Health and Health Sciences faculty. The emphasis is on systems dedicated to student academic success, such as those rooted in early academic warning, predictive modeling, and developmental academic advising
  • Participate in prospective student recruitment for the department
  • Perform other assigned tasks consistent with the scope of the position.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a related profession such as Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, health related degrees or other relevant disciplines
  • Two (2) years of college level academic advising experience
  • Familiarity with computer information systems, web-based records and registration, such as: Banner, Degree Works, Business Objects, and Salesforce
  • Documented ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports with minimal errors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Less than two years relevant experience, comprised of one or more years working with students, preferably at the collegiate level, and/or less than two years of academic advising, or similar student facing experience
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Suite software, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications, web editing, and Zoom
  • Comfortable presenting complex information in face-to-face and online modalities

Academic Advisor/Counselor Associate level salary range is $37,800 to $47,200

Modes of Work

Hybrid

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Background Screening
